Garry Nichols will be here with a Powerpoint presentation and discussion of his artwork & creative process.

Garry was born in Tasmania, Australia, and first studied fine art full time at the National Art School in Sydney and at East Sydney Tech (evenings). He received a Marten Bequest 2-year Traveling Art Prize ( In Australia 1978) deciding to travel to Europe and study the great artists in museums. After receiving an offer of a scholarship to New York Studio School, he became a full-time student from September 1978 - 1985.
Garry has studied at the NYSS with Nick Carone, Peter Agostini, Mercedes Matter, George McNeil, Sidney Geist, Bruce Gagnier, John Walker, Rackstraw Downes, Jake Berthot, William Tucker, William Wright and Ruth Miller.
He took anatomy classes at the Art Students league with Robert Beverly Hale 1980-1981.
Selected awards Garr has received, include the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts,
Grant for Painting (1999), the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Emergency
Grant (1999), the New York Foundation for the Arts, Fellowship in Painting
(1994).
As a New York Studio School student, Garry was awarded a Skowhegan
Scholarship in 1982 and then the Merit Scholarships twice at the Studio
School in 1981 and 1982. The 1980 Peter Brown Scholarship from Australia
was also awarded while he attended the New York Studio School.
Since 1986 Garry has had exhibitions in New York including the Brooklyn Museum, Leo Castelli Gallery, White Columns, the Drawing Center, David Beitzel Gallery, Robert Steele Gallery, Rotunda Gallery, Artists Space, Marymount Manhattan College, Pierogi Gallery, BRIC House, Parallel Art Space and Sideshow Gallery. Exhibitions in Australia include Gallery A, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Macquarie Galleries, and Stella Downer Fine Art. Garry's work is included in collections in New York, Japan, and Australia.
Garry was invited to lecture in Sydney, Australia, and in New York on “Robert Rauschenberg: His life and Art” and also gave a lecture “60 years of Australian Art” in New York. Additionally, he has presented his own artwork “A Painters Journey” at Dartmouth College New Hampshire, and at the National Arts School, Sydney.
Additionally, Garry has had the good fortune to teach painting and drawing at the National Academy of Design- School of Fine Arts, Chautauqua Institution-School of Art, Parsons School of Design in New York, at the National Art School in Sydney, and the University of Tasmania, School of Fine Art.
He continues to reside and maintain a studio in Brooklyn, New York City and travels back to Tasmania, Australia on average every 5 years to work on drawings, ideas for paintings, exhibit, lecture and teach.
